Just like that, another year is over. As we farewell 2018, now is the perfect time to take a moment to reflect upon the year that has passed and to set some clear intentions for the year ahead.
This year, we encourage you to skip the prosecco-fuelled resolutions (you know you’ll never keep them!) and instead think about the changes you can make in your everyday life to positively impact the world around you.
We are proud to have supported The Silent Hunter shark expeditions in recent years, and through this association have developed a particular passion for protecting our oceans. We know that single-use plastics are the biggest threat to our oceans and marine life, so we’re making our New Year resolutions with a few small-but-powerful changes:
In Australia, more than 1 billion coffee cups are made from 720,510 trees each year. These plastic-lined cups have led to an extra 7,000 tons of non-recyclable waste, clogging up our landfills and taking up to 100 years to break down. So, skip the takeaway cup and ask for your morning brew in a reusable coffee cup. We’re excited to have added our own portable coffee cup, Camino, to our flask family. This 12oz reusable takeaway coffee cup has internal barista measurement lines, a spill-proof lock lid, and is vacuum sealed to keep your coffee hot while you’re on the go.
We were shocked to learn that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world, just after the oil industry. In 2019 we’ll be focussed on minimising our consumption of fast fashion and taking more responsibility for our shopping choices by investing in ethical brands whenever we can. The site Well Made Clothes is a fantastic resource to learn more about the sustainable, local, fairtrade and ethical brands that are worthy of your fashion dollar.
Despite recycling programs that have been in place for decades now, more than 90% of plastic water bottles still wind up in a landfill each year. Enough is enough! Ditch the plastic bottles and invest in a quality glass water bottle or infuser flask.
A simple rule for a more eco-friendly household: if it doesn’t have to be single-use, it shouldn’t be. This year we’ll be swapping paper towels for washable cotton dish towels, and covering our food with reusable food wraps rather than plastic cling wrap or foil. There are a number of options to choose from — beeswax wraps are easy to wash, dry and reuse over and over, or try a plant-based vegan reusable food wrap made from cotton and plant waxes.
Shampoo & Conditioner
Globally, more than 80 billion plastic shampoo and conditioner bottles are disposed of every year. Luckily, finding environmentally-conscious beauty products is getting increasingly easier. Iconic Aussie brand KEVIN MURPHY made the pledge earlier this year to produce its packaging from 100% recycled ocean water plastics by mid-2019, saving up to 360 tons of new plastics each year. We’re also loving the waste-free options from NZ brand Ethique, who have a range of beauty bars — from shampoo and conditioner to self-tanner — that dissolve completely, and even the sleeves they arrive in are 100% dissolvable and compostable.
